en dash
Span-marking punctuation mark
An en dash is a punctuation mark (–) wider than a hyphen but narrower than an em dash.
It typically indicates ranges: pages 12–47, the 1914–1918 war, the New York–London flight.
The name refers to its width, roughly that of a typeset letter N.
Some style guides use it with spaces as an alternative to the em dash for parenthetical insertions.
