empathising

Sharing another's feelings

Empathising is the British spelling of empathizing—understanding or sharing another person's feelings by imaginatively entering their perspective.

It goes beyond sympathy (feeling *for* someone) to feeling *with* them: She spent the session empathising with her client's frustration.

The skill is central to counselling, conflict resolution, and close relationships.
