charge nurse
Shift nursing supervisor
A charge nurse is a registered nurse who supervises a hospital unit or department during a shift.
The charge nurse coordinates patient care, assigns tasks to other nurses, handles administrative duties, and serves as the point person for problems that arise: The charge nurse reassigned staff when two patients needed emergency attention.
The role typically rotates among experienced nurses rather than being a permanent position.
