electroscopes
Static electricity sensors
Electroscopes are instruments for detecting electric charge.
The classic design uses two thin metal leaves suspended from a rod inside a glass jar; when charge is applied, the leaves repel each other and spread apart.
The degree of separation indicates the strength of the charge.
Once common in physics classrooms, electroscopes have largely been replaced by electronic instruments.
