eighty-sixing

Throwing someone out

Eighty-sixing is refusing service to a customer or getting rid of something.

The term originated in restaurant and bar slang—to eighty-six someone is to kick them out; to eighty-six a menu item is to mark it unavailable.

The meaning has broadened: They eighty-sixed the whole project after the budget cuts.

Also written as 86ing.
