An ego trip is an activity pursued mainly to boost one's sense of importance or superiority.
The phrase usually carries disapproval—suggesting someone is showing off or seeking validation rather than accomplishing anything useful: His whole speech was just an ego trip.
To ego-trip or go on an ego trip is to indulge in such self-aggrandizing behavior.
