dry gulch

Waterless desert canyon

Dry gulch is a ravine or gully that remains dry except during heavy rains—common terrain in the American West.

The verb means to ambush someone, originally by attacking from such terrain: They dry-gulched him on the road to town.

The term extends to any surprise attack or underhanded betrayal.
