downcountry
Away from highlands
Downcountry means toward or in the lower-lying regions of a country, opposite of upcountry.
The term appears in places with significant elevation changes, where "down" indicates coastal or valley areas versus mountainous interior: They moved downcountry to escape the harsh mountain winters.
In Hawaii, downcountry refers to lower elevations on Maui, contrasting with the cooler upcountry slopes.
