down-regulation
Cellular response reduction
Down-regulation is the process by which a cell decreases its response to a stimulus, typically by reducing the number of receptors on its surface or diminishing their sensitivity.
The term appears in biology, pharmacology, and medicine: Chronic exposure to the drug caused down-regulation of dopamine receptors.
The opposite process is up-regulation.
