dolphin-safe

Tuna fishing certification

Dolphin-safe describes tuna fishing methods that avoid harming dolphins, which often swim above tuna schools and get caught in nets.

The label appears on canned tuna to indicate compliance with certain fishing practices: I only buy dolphin-safe tuna.

The term emerged in the 1990s after public outcry over dolphin deaths in the fishing industry.
