dog soldiers
Military working canines
Dog soldiers were warriors in certain Plains Indian tribes—particularly the Cheyenne—who served as elite military societies responsible for protecting the tribe and enforcing order.
The term now appears in historical and Western contexts: The dog soldiers rode out to meet the cavalry.
More loosely, dog soldier can mean a common foot soldier or low-ranking military grunt.
