division bell

Vote-calling signal

A division bell is a bell rung in a parliament—particularly the British House of Commons—to summon members to vote.

When a division (a formal vote requiring members to physically separate into "aye" and "no" lobbies) is called, the bells ring throughout the parliamentary estate, giving members a few minutes to reach the chamber: The division bell rang and MPs hurried from the tearoom.
