dive-bomber

Steep-attack aircraft

A dive-bomber is a military aircraft designed to attack by diving steeply toward its target before releasing bombs, achieving greater accuracy than level bombing.

The technique was prominent in World War II, with aircraft like the German Stuka becoming infamous: Dive-bombers screamed down on the convoy.

The term can also describe the pilot of such an aircraft.
