dilatation

Stretching something wider

Dilatation is the act or process of expanding, widening, or stretching—particularly of hollow organs or openings.

The term appears almost exclusively in medical contexts: cervical dilatation during labor, dilatation of the pupils.

It means the same as dilation, which is now the more common form in both medical and general usage.
