dibbuk

Jewish folklore ghost

A dibbuk is a malevolent spirit in Jewish folklore—the dislocated soul of a dead person that enters and possesses a living body.

The possessed person speaks in the voice of the dead and must be exorcised through religious ritual.

Also spelled dybbuk.

The rabbi performed the rite to cast out the dibbuk.
