diaphone

Coastal warning horn

A diaphone is a type of foghorn that produces a distinctive two-tone sound—a sustained note followed by a lower grunt as air pressure drops.

The mechanism uses compressed air forced through slotted pistons.

Diaphones were once standard equipment at lighthouses and harbor entrances, their deep, penetrating tones carrying across miles of water in poor visibility.
