dial-up access
Slow internet connection
Dial-up access is a method of connecting to the Internet or another network using a telephone line and modem.
The modem dials a phone number, establishes a connection through audible tones, and transmits data over the voice network.
Dominant through the 1990s, dial-up was slow and tied up the phone line: We couldn't make calls when someone was online.
Broadband has largely replaced it.
