dethawing

Warming frozen things

Dethawing is a nonstandard variant of thawing, formed by adding the prefix de- to a word that already means to remove frost or bring to room temperature.

The de- is redundant—thaw already means to unfreeze—but the form persists in casual speech: I'm dethawing some chicken for dinner.

Standard usage prefers thaw or defrost.
