derelict ship
Forsaken floating wreck
A derelict ship is a vessel abandoned at sea, typically damaged, adrift, and no longer under anyone's control.
Maritime law distinguishes derelicts from ships merely in distress—a derelict has been forsaken by its crew with no intention of return.
The term extends figuratively to any abandoned, deteriorating craft: The derelict ship had been rusting in the harbor for decades.
