dental abscess
Infected tooth pocket
A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection in or around a tooth.
It typically produces severe, throbbing pain that may radiate to the jaw or ear, along with swelling, sensitivity to temperature, and sometimes fever.
Without treatment, the infection can spread to surrounding tissues or bone: The dentist drained the dental abscess and prescribed antibiotics.
