denizenship

Formal inhabitant standing

Denizenship is the status of being a denizen—an inhabitant or resident of a place, particularly one with certain rights but not full citizenship.

Historically, a denizen in English law was a foreigner granted some privileges of a native-born subject: His denizenship allowed him to own land but not vote.

The term now appears mostly in discussions of immigration status and belonging.
