deniability
Claim of unawareness
Deniability is the ability to deny knowledge of or responsibility for something, especially wrongdoing.
The term typically appears as plausible deniability—a situation arranged so that a person (usually a leader or official) can credibly claim ignorance if the action is exposed: The operation was structured to give the president plausible deniability.
The concept originated in intelligence and political contexts but now applies broadly to any situation where someone maintains distance from questionable activities.
