demarketing

Deliberately reducing demand

Demarketing is the deliberate effort to reduce demand for a product or service.

Companies may demarket when supply is limited, when certain customers are unprofitable, or when promoting restraint serves public interest: The campaign demarketed sugary drinks to children.

Governments demarket tobacco and alcohol through warning labels, advertising bans, and taxes.

The term reverses the usual goal of marketing, which is to stimulate demand.
