immediate reaction
Spontaneous first response
An immediate reaction is a response that happens right away, without delay or deliberation.
The phrase emphasizes speed and often spontaneity: My immediate reaction was to laugh.
It frequently describes gut responses before more considered thoughts take over: His immediate reaction was anger, but he calmed down once he understood the situation.
