deinstitutionalised
Freed from facilities
Deinstitutionalised describes someone or something that has been removed from institutional care or control.
The term most often applies to psychiatric patients discharged from long-term hospitals into community settings: Many deinstitutionalised patients struggled to find housing.
It can also describe broader shifts away from institutional systems: deinstitutionalised education.
The spelling is British; American English uses deinstitutionalized.
