defrag

Consolidate scattered files

Defrag is to reorganize data on a computer hard drive so that related pieces are stored together rather than scattered across the disk.

Short for defragment.

Over time, files become fragmented as they're saved in whatever space is available; defragmenting consolidates them for faster access: I need to defrag my laptop—it's running slow.

The term belongs to an earlier era of spinning hard drives; solid-state drives don't benefit from defragmentation.
