defragmenting
Consolidating scattered data
Defragmenting is reorganizing data on a computer's hard drive so that related pieces are stored together rather than scattered across the disk.
Files get fragmented as they're created, modified, and deleted; defragmenting consolidates them for faster access.
The process was routine maintenance for older drives but is largely unnecessary for modern solid-state drives.
My computer's running slow—I should try defragmenting it.
