disk defragmenter
Speeds up old drives
A disk defragmenter is software that reorganizes files on a hard drive so that each file's data occupies contiguous sectors rather than scattered fragments.
When files are stored in pieces across a disk, the read head must jump around to access them, slowing performance.
Defragmentation consolidates these fragments: I ran the disk defragmenter overnight.
The utility became standard in operating systems during the era of spinning hard drives but is largely unnecessary for solid-state drives.
