deerstalking

Pursuing deer stealthily

Deerstalking is the practice of hunting deer by tracking and approaching them on foot, stalking close enough for a shot.

The term is chiefly British, associated with the Scottish Highlands.

The deerstalker hat—with front and back brims and ear flaps—takes its name from the pursuit, though it's now more associated with Sherlock Holmes than actual hunting.
