deer-stalking

Pursuing wild deer

Deer-stalking is the practice of hunting deer by tracking and approaching them on foot, rather than waiting in a fixed position.

The hunter moves stealthily through terrain, using cover and wind direction to get within shooting range.

The term is particularly associated with Scottish Highland traditions: He spent a week deer-stalking in the Highlands.

A deerstalker hat takes its name from this pursuit.
