death panels

Healthcare denial boards

Death panels is a pejorative term for government bodies that would allegedly decide which patients deserve medical treatment based on cost-benefit analysis—essentially choosing who lives and dies.

The phrase emerged in 2009 U.S. healthcare debates as an attack on proposed end-of-life counseling provisions, which critics claimed would lead to rationing care for the elderly or disabled.

Though widely debunked as a mischaracterization, the term persists in political rhetoric opposing government-run healthcare.
