self-righting

Tips back up

Self-righting describes something designed to return to an upright position after being tipped or capsized.

The term applies most often to boats and life rafts engineered to flip back over in rough seas: The coast guard uses self-righting rescue boats.

It also describes toys, buoys, and other objects with weighted bases that prevent them from staying overturned.
