Customhouses are government buildings where customs duties are collected and where ships or goods are cleared for entry into or departure from a country.
The term reflects an older era when international trade passed through specific physical checkpoints: The merchant presented his papers at the customhouse.
Now largely replaced by customs offices or simply customs.
