crystalloid

Small dissolved particle

A crystalloid is a substance that can dissolve and pass through a semipermeable membrane, as opposed to a colloid, which cannot.

In medicine, crystalloid solutions like saline or Ringer's lactate are intravenous fluids used to restore hydration and electrolyte balance: The ER team started a crystalloid infusion.

The term also describes crystal-like structures in cells.
