cross the Styx

Enter the underworld

To cross the Styx is to die.

In Greek mythology, the Styx was the river separating the living world from the underworld; the dead crossed it by ferry to reach the afterlife.

The phrase is literary and somewhat archaic: He crossed the Styx before his time.

Sometimes used with dark humor about someone's demise.
