court jesters
Castle comedy performers
Court jesters were entertainers employed by medieval and Renaissance monarchs to provide amusement through jokes, songs, acrobatics, and witty commentary.
Unlike other courtiers, jesters enjoyed license to mock powerful figures and speak uncomfortable truths under cover of foolishness—a privilege that made them valuable advisors as well as entertainers.
The king's jester was the only one who dared tell him the war was lost.
