counternarratives

Stories challenging mainstream

Counternarratives are stories or accounts that challenge dominant or official versions of events.

They offer alternative perspectives, often from marginalized groups whose experiences aren't reflected in mainstream narratives: Oral histories preserve counternarratives that textbooks ignore.

The term appears frequently in discussions of history, media, and social justice, where established accounts are questioned or reframed.
