underground press
Radical alternative journalism
The underground press refers to newspapers, magazines, and other publications produced outside mainstream channels, typically to avoid censorship or spread dissenting views.
The term evokes both literal secrecy—printing presses hidden from authorities—and figurative marginality.
It flourished during periods of political repression and in 1960s counterculture: The underground press covered stories the mainstream media ignored.
Now largely replaced by online alternatives.
