cook out

Alfresco grill gathering

A cook out (also cookout) is an outdoor meal where food is grilled or barbecued, typically a casual social gathering: We're having a cook out for the Fourth of July.

The term is especially common in American English, often interchangeable with barbecue.

To cook out is to prepare food this way: Let's cook out tonight instead of ordering pizza.
