conflicting claims
Mutually exclusive statements
Conflicting claims are assertions that cannot both be true, or that compete for the same thing.
In disputes over property, territory, or custody, conflicting claims must be resolved by determining which party has the stronger right: Both nations have conflicting claims to the island.
In argumentation, conflicting claims represent contradictory positions: The witnesses gave conflicting claims about what happened.
