commissionaire

Building entrance attendant

A commissionaire is a uniformed attendant at the entrance of a building—a hotel, theater, or office block—who opens doors, hails taxis, and directs visitors.

The term is chiefly British; Americans would more likely say doorman.

In Britain and Commonwealth countries, commissionaires are often retired military personnel: The commissionaire touched his cap as we entered.
