combat patrol
Armed scouting mission
A combat patrol is a military unit sent into hostile territory to engage enemy forces, gather intelligence, or disrupt operations.
Unlike reconnaissance patrols focused on observation, combat patrols actively seek contact with the enemy: The platoon conducted a combat patrol along the river.
The term also describes the mission itself.
