colorwash

Translucent wall technique

Colorwash is a thin, translucent coat of diluted paint applied to create a soft, layered effect on walls or other surfaces.

The technique allows underlying texture or previous colors to show through, producing depth rather than solid coverage: We gave the bedroom a blue colorwash over the white base coat.

As a verb, to colorwash is to apply this treatment.

In film and photography, a colorwash is a tint that suffuses an image with a particular hue for mood or stylistic effect.
