collared dove

Pale suburban bird

A collared dove is a pale gray-brown dove with a distinctive black half-collar on the back of its neck.

Native to Asia, it spread rapidly across Europe in the twentieth century and was introduced to North America.

Smaller and slimmer than a wood pigeon, it has become a common suburban bird: A pair of collared doves nested in the garden.
