cold case unit
Dormant crime squad
A cold case unit is a law enforcement team that investigates unsolved crimes, typically homicides or missing persons cases that have gone dormant after initial leads dried up.
These units reexamine old evidence with fresh eyes and new technology: The cold case unit reopened the 1987 murder after DNA testing became available.
Sometimes called a cold case squad.
