cogwheels
Interlocking mechanical circles
Cogwheels are wheels with teeth around their edges that mesh with other toothed wheels to transmit motion in machinery.
The term is interchangeable with gears, though cogwheel sounds slightly more old-fashioned or mechanical: The cogwheels of the antique clock clicked into place.
Figuratively, cogwheels suggest interconnected parts of a system: She was just another cogwheel in the corporate machine.
