wife beating
Domestic partner assault
Wife beating is physical violence by a husband against his wife.
The term was common when such abuse was treated as a private family matter or even tacitly accepted: In the nineteenth century, wife beating was rarely prosecuted.
Contemporary usage typically prefers "domestic violence" or "intimate partner violence," which recognize abuse in all relationship types.
