cobbing

Building with earth

Cobbing is removing or breaking off pieces from something, particularly in mining contexts where ore is separated from waste rock by hand.

In British dialect, cobbing means striking or hitting, especially on the buttocks as punishment.

The word also applies to breaking up coal into smaller pieces or knocking ears of corn from their stalks.
