classical age

Greece and Rome

Classical age refers to a period considered the height of a civilization's cultural or artistic achievement.

Most often it means ancient Greece and Rome, roughly the 5th century BCE through the fall of Rome—the era that produced works later generations treated as models.

The term applies to other cultures too: the classical age of Islam, of Chinese poetry, of Hollywood cinema.

The designation always implies a golden standard against which later periods are measured.
