clam shell

Hinged sea casing

A clamshell is the hinged two-part shell of a clam, opening and closing on a single axis.

The shape extends to containers, cases, and devices that open the same way: a clamshell phone, a clamshell food container.

In excavation, a clamshell is a bucket with two hinged jaws for digging.

Also spelled as two words.
